Slurry Distribution Systems
Standard "3 Wire" slurry distribution systems
Standard Lapmaster lapping machines are equipped with a "3 Wire" slurry distribution systems consisting of a centrifugal pump and orifice tube. This system provides the best balance of economy and functionality for dispensing a controlled volume of conventional lapping slurry.
The slurry distribution system supplied with polishing machines varies greatly and is determined by the polishing process technology the customer has selected for use. Listed below are optional distribution systems and an explanation of when to recommend each.
Peristaltic pumping systems
Peristaltic pumping systems are very precisely adjusted slurry distribution systems used to dispense diamond lapping slurry and chemical polishing slurry. Some lapping applications, typically requiring higher slurry volume, are best processed with diamond lapping slurry. This type of diamond slurry has a much higher concentration of diamond per unit volume than the standard diamond polishing slurries, but the abrasive concentration is much less than conventional abrasive lapping slurry. Peristaltic pumps are used to precisely pump the “in between” slurry concentrations. These are relatively expensive systems. The constituents of the system will vary with the type of slurry. Slurries containing abrasive will necessitate an agitator motor. Chemical slurries generally do not require agitation.
Diamond Slurry Dispenser
The diamond slurry dispenser is an electronic/pneumatic control unit used to precisely meter specific volumes of diamond slurry. The dispenser is a two stage unit that will control both diamond slurry and diamond lubricant. Adjustable digital timers in the dispenser control the duration of diamond spray, the interval between sprays and a count down timer indicates when the next spray will occur. Manual override of the programmed timers is standard.
The dispenser is the best equipment to use for maintaining a high degree of process control and consistency when diamond processing. It also serves to economize on the use of expensive diamond slurry. An additional benefit of automatic slurry dispensing is freeing the operator to perform other duties while the machine is processing.
